Nicki Minaj 'Manifested' Rihanna For 'Fly' Feature, J.R. Rotem Says

Producer at the helm of uplifting Pink Friday tune recalls how Minaj set about landing the collabo.

Nicki Minaj may be an upstart artist, but the Lil Wayne protégé handles her business like a veteran.

For "Fly," from her debut, Pink Friday, Minaj reached out to producer J.R. Rotem (Britney Spears, Rick Ross, Leona Lewis) to helm the track, an inspirational tune that was a last-minute addition to the album.

"Near the tail end of her project, I came into the studio and I had some tracks [for her]. That was one of the ones I was excited about," Rotem told MTV News. "When I played it for her, she knew instantly: 'Yes, this is the record.' She connected with it immediately. I could just tell she was excited by it, which excited me."

The demo version of "Fly" featured a studio session singer on the hook, but Minaj had another idea, namely Rihanna.

"That would be great," the producer recalled telling Minaj. "But getting Rihanna to do a hook for you is easier said than done. He added, "I think that speaks to Nicki's star power. I said, 'Yeah, she's definitely first choice.' "

Time passed, Rotem e-mailed Nicki and the two went back and forth until the rapper told him Rihanna had agreed to sing on the track.

"It took time because she was promoting her own album and traveling overseas," he said. "It happened, and I heard it when Nicki gave me the record and it really was one of those incredible things that was really a blessing. It manifested. She said she wanted it and it happened."

Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy: A Track-By-Track Guide

Check out an in-depth examination of Yeezy's new masterwork.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Kanye West
Photo: Shirlaine Forrest/ Getty Images

Kanye West's new album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, is a return to form of sorts for the mercurial star on the most basic of levels — as a producer and an MC — following a departure with his last project, 2008's 808s & Heartbreak, a soul-baring effort soaked in personal pain and filtered through AutoTune.

With My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, the Chicago artist injects who he once was — a hyperactive musician, moody celebrity and gifted rapper — with the imprints of who he has become after his seclusion and re-emergence following the infamous Taylor Swift incident: an unwavering talent tarnished by controversy but resurgent in his refusal to be defined by anything other than himself.

The set, Kanye's fifth studio album, is an arrogant, remorseful, refreshing probe of perhaps the most complicated figure in pop culture today. The fact that West is the one examining himself makes it all the more brilliant and transparent.

Here, MTV News delivers song-by-song crib notes to 'Ye's deep dive into his psyche.

1. "Dark Fantasy"

On the leadoff number, West reasserts the lyrical acumen he displayed on his first three albums but doesn't surrender the demonstrative narrative he uncorked on 808s & Heartbreak. Over the robust production of No I.D., Mike Dean and the RZA, which includes a driving organ, tickling keys and feathery choir, West bridges the storyline from his 2009 VMAs incident to his resilient return. And like that, he's off.

Illuminating Rhymes: "The plan was to drink until the pain over, but what's worse the pain or the hangover?"

2. "Gorgeous" (featuring Kid Cudi and Raekwon)

Yeezy is as boastful as he's ever been on "Gorgeous," but while his lyrics are razor sharp, the production here is softer, resulting in a melodic finger wag to his naysayers rather than searing jabs.

Illuminating Rhymes: "But this pimp is at the top of Mount Olympus/ Ready for the world's games/ This is my Olympics/ We make 'em say 'ho' cause the game is so pimpish/ Choke a 'South Park' writer with a fish stick."

3. "Power"

The track that started 'Ye's comeback is as stirring months later here as it was when it first leaked to the Web. "Power" is one of the few previously released gems that the producer didn't tweak for the album version. The record is unflinching, uncompromising, and undoubtedly 'Ye's mantra for more than just the current year.

Illuminating Rhymes: "I just needed time alone with my own thoughts, got treasures in my mind/ But couldn't open up my vaults ... Reality is catching up with me/ Taking my inner child/ I'm fighting for custody."

4. "All of the Lights (Interlude)"/ 5. "All of the Lights"

A smattering of a song with upward of 10 additional singers, "All of the Lights" is as fearless a track as West has ever made. The rapper is hardly the most present vocalist on this percolating storytelling number, sharing the spotlight with Rihanna, among others. But as a producer he's front and center — his orchestration is the driving force behind this sonic train.

Illuminating Rhymes: "Restraining order, can't see my daughter/ Her mother, brother, grandmother hate me in that order."

6. "Monster" (featuring Rick Ross, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj and Bon Iver)

A booming collaboration where each MC pushes the other beyond the brink of one-upmanship until Minaj obliterates the track with a hodgepodge of styling — from her flow to her vocal inflection and varied tonal cadences.

Illuminating Rhymes: "Yeah, I'm in that Tonka the color of Willy Wonka/ You could be the king but watch the queen conquer."

7. "So Appalled" (featuring Jay-Z, Pusha T, CyHi the Prynce, Swizz Beatz and the RZA)

This all-star cipher is a backpackers dream as 'Ye's G.O.O.D. Music soldiers fire away with resolve. But the Brooklyn icon, Jay-Z, steals the show with an edgy verse dismissing his critics with a 16 that's as pushy as a New Yorker during rush hour. Please, Hammer, stop replying.

Illuminating Rhymes: "I'm so appalled, I might buy the mall/ Just to show niggas how much I have in store."

8. "Devil in a New Dress" (featuring Rick Ross)

West's breezy G.O.O.D. Fridays release gets a wintertime tune-up with Ross riding shotgun. The Miami Don's majestic contribution comes with a revamped breakdown setting up his slick boats. Still, Yeezy's verse holds up over the Boss's even with the refinement.

Illuminating Rhymes: "How she gonna wake up and not love me no more/ I thought I was the a--hole, I guess it's rubbing off."

9. "Runaway" (featuring Pusha T)

The emotional centerpiece of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, "Runaway" gets a face-lift from the radio version with West returning the MP samples he blasted onto the track during his memorable 2010 MTV Video Music Awards performance. Pusha's sneering guest spot remains the same, but in addition to the sampled tics that begin the track, the Clipse MC's verse is sandwiched on the back end with an elongated outro.

Illuminating Rhymes: "Never was much of a romantic, I could never take the intimacy/ And I know I did damage, 'cause the look in your eyes is killing me."

10. "Hell of a Life"

A brooding number with synth-heavy production and frenetic keys strokes. Here, West is all bravado in his hedonistic pursuits.

Illuminating Rhymes: "One day I'm gonna marry a porn star/ We'll have a big-ass crib and a long yard."

11. "Blame Game" (featuring John Legend)

The most melancholy track on the album, "Blame Game" finds West turning inward as he pensively dissects a deteriorating relationship — doling out blame between himself and his lady before ultimately assigning fault to their fading connection.

Illuminating Rhymes: "I know that you were somewhere doing your thing/ And when the phone called, it just rang and rang/ You ain't pick up but the phone accidentally called me back and I heard the whole thing."

12. "Lost in the World" (featuring Bon Iver)/ 13. "Who Will Survive in America"

The denouement of Fantasy is a rollicking effort, thundering in its production and chock-full of proclamations from West that lead to more questions than answers after an hour of listening. The track caps off an exhilarating audio experience that's sonically groundbreaking and lyrically thrilling. The final selection, a Gil Scott-Heron spoken-word excerpt, slowly punctuates the artful track with a stunning statement that seeks to leave West's fantasy ride open for more life to be lived rather than bringing it to a conclusion.

Illuminating Rhymes: "You're my devil, you're my angel/ You're my heaven, you're my hell/ You're my now, you're my forever/ You're my freedom, you're my jail/ You're my lies, you're my truth/ You're my war, you're my truce/ You're my question, you're my proof/ You're my stress, you're my masseuse."

Leslie Nielsen: A Fan's Appreciation

Read a tribute to the 'Airplane' and 'Naked Gun' funnyman, who died Sunday at age 84.
By Eric Ditzian

Leslie Nielsen
Photo: Paramount Pictures

Owning a VHS tape of "Airplane" was utterly pointless. The disaster-flick spoof played on what seemed like a near-constant basic-cable loop, available to feed the insatiable need for a first grader to hear Leslie Nielsen quip, yet again, that while everyone on his ill-fated flight was served steak or fish, he managed to dine on lasagna.

But there was a certain comfort in knowing that I had access to the movie any time I needed a quick fix. And I needed it often. For me, there was simply nothing else like it. I didn't know movies could do what "Airplane" did. A glue-sniffing, pill-popping air-traffic controller? A little girl who takes her coffee black, just like her men? And what the heck was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar doing there?

"Airplane" is a deeply strange movie, and its strangeness had the effect, even after countless viewings, of keeping the film endlessly surprising. How is that even possible? I knew every line and still it felt like anything could happen at any moment. It never got old.

Nor did Nielsen, so it seemed. He remained almost unfairly frozen in time — with that same white helmet of hair, that same doughy-skinned face he sported in "Airplane," and then later in the "Naked Gun" trilogy. He was a man without a past. It would be decades before I learned of his previous work as a dramatic actor. I knew only what I saw on screen: one of the funniest damn people in the world. And so it was with great sadness that I read of Nielsen's passing on Sunday at the age of 84.

My first encounters with "Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad" were a shock to the system. My thinking went something like, "You mean to tell me there's a funnier movie than 'Airplane?' " As Lieutenant Frank Drebin, Nielsen just slayed me. The scenes where he crashes a major league baseball game, impersonating an opera singer named Enrico Pallazzo and then stepping into the role of call-botching home plate umpire remain some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen.

At least that's the way I remember it. It's been a while since I've seen a "Naked Gun" flick. For that matter, "Airplane" no longer seems to be on TV constantly. And where that original VHS tape is, I have no idea. But these are movies that are sewn into my pop culture DNA. There's a certain comfort in that.

What are your favorite Leslie Nielsen movie moments? Tell us in the comments.

Cheryl Cole Got Me Voted Off, Says Katie Waissel

With the hit UK talent show winding down to a close, Cheryl Cole was back out for another live episode of "X Factor" in London, England on Sunday night (November 28).

Always a difficult time, Miss Cole and her fellow judges were forced to send two competitors home - with Wagner Carrilho and Katie Waissel being the unlucky singers.

While 54-year-old Wagner got the boot after losing a sing-off to Tesco worker Mary Byrne, Miss Waissel exited while blaming Cheryl for her departure.

A show source told the Daily Star: ?Katie was livid as she already thought Cheryl cares more about her ?mini-me? Cher and is backing her to win.?

The insider added, "She was devastated and thinks Cheryl had proved that she doesn?t care about anyone but Cher, who she has dubbed her mini-me.?

'Twilight Saga: Eclipse' DVD -- Watch An Exclusive Clip Here!

We have a preview of the 'tent scene,' including hilarious commentary by Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.
By Kara Warner

Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart in "Eclipse"
Photo: Summit Entertainment

All right Twilighters, have we got a Thanksgiving treat for you! While "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" DVD doesn't come out until December 4, MTV News is delighted to present an exclusive clip from the highly anticipated release — complete with commentary from Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart!

This isn't just any clip either. Summit has kindly bestowed upon us a juicy little snippet from the fan favorite "tent scene."

In this clip, fans get to see the heated exchange between Edward (Pattinson) and Jacob (Taylor Lautner) as they discuss how Jacob will have to get into a sleeping bag with Bella (Stewart) in order to keep her warm and save her from freezing to death. Edward, of course, is not at all pleased with Jacob getting anywhere near Bella, but he must concede for Bella's sake. Jacob, taking advantage of the situation, revels in the fact that his warmer-than-normal body temperature means he can do for Bella what Edward can't.

The scene itself offers plenty of entertainment, but it's Pattinson and Stewart's hilarious voiceover commentary about the scene that really sells it.

"Slurp your coffee a little bit more," we hear Stewart say to Pattinson. "That's what the fans want."

"It's not coffee," Pattinson responds. "It's an Arnold Palmer," he says, attempting to pronounce it with an American accent.

"You're drinking an Arnold Palmer?" Stewart asks, sounding amused. "Having a little lemonade and iced tea?"

Meanwhile, Jacob has just crawled into Bella's sleeping bag, which draws Stewart and Pattinson back to the clip.

"God, he's so gross, so brazen!" Pattinson says of Lautner's werewolf. "I really don't like Jacob."

"Aww," Stewart says.

"Look at him and his tattoo and stuff. Ugh," Pattinson mock scoffs.

"He's just young and overzealous," Stewart says defending the young wolf.

"He's not!" Pattinson insists. "He does it on purpose. He's looking at me when he's saying this stuff."

"Yeah, that is weird," Stewart agrees.

"What is wrong with him? He's like, 'I don't even care about her, I just want to,' " Pattinson trails off.

"Look at him cradling!" Stewart points out, which provokes a burst of laughter from Pattinson. "His little head nooked in there," she adds.

"You look like you're milking him," Pattinson says as both "Twilight" actors break out laughing.

A terrific tease, and if that little sneak peek doesn't make you want to pre-order that DVD now, we don't know what will.

What do you think about the clip? Stewart and Pattinson's commentary? Tell us in the comments!

Check out everything we've got on "Eclipse."
